With 2016 just around the corner, most people are beginning to look ahead to the New Year’s resolutions they will make on January 1st. The caring team of doctors at American Family Care urgent care and walk-in clinics in Chattanooga, Cleveland, and Hixson want to remind our community to set safe and realistic goals for a healthy and active 2016.

New Year’s resolutions can vary greatly depending on the person, and can fit a number of categories including weight loss, exercise, and professional goals.

While the new year can serve as the perfect opportunity to set aside bad habits and pursue a healthier lifestyle, there may be also a tendency for people to bite off more than they can chew at the beginning of the new year, resulting in goals that are unachievable and lead to burnout.

“Healthy New Year’s resolutions can either be a great way to start the new year,” said Dr. Todd Rudolph, Medical Director at American Family Care of East Tennessee. “Often, the most successful New Year’s resolutions are those that are viewed as a permanent lifestyle change, rather than short-term goals.”

Examples of healthy goals for the New Year include:

Increase your aerobic activity: Do you live a sedentary lifestyle? Try walking or biking to local businesses when possible. Do you already go for walks? Try to add an occasional run to change things up. By incorporating exercise into your daily routine, you’ll be able to stick with it and enjoy the benefits of better health.

Eat better: When creating a healthier eating plan, avoid setting shortsighted goals focused only on extreme weight loss. Instead, focus on adding proteins, fruits, and vegetables to your diet, and reducing caloric and sugar intake. Weight loss and increased energy will be the natural results of properly nourishing your body!

Get a check-up: Many Americans avoid going into their doctor’s office for regular check-ups. The best cure for any illness is prevention and early awareness, so schedule your annual exam this New Year.
