We’re right in the heart of cold and flu season. But so many of the illnesses during the fall and winter months have overlapping symptoms, so it can be difficult to tell what illness you have.
That’s why our team at AFC Urgent Care TN is offering some insight into the different illnesses you may experience.
What Is the Common Cold?
The common cold is a viral infection that affects your upper respiratory system, which includes your nose and throat.
A common cold is extremely contagious, so it is important to take action to protect yourself from the virus, especially around people who might be sick. Be sure to wash your hands on a regular basis and avoid touching your face with your hands.
Symptoms of a Common Cold
- Low-grade fever
- Runny nose
- Slight body aches
- Sore throat
- Stuffy nose
Can a Cold Turn Into a Sinus Infection?
Yes, actually. If the cold virus causes your sinuses to swell, then your cold can cause a sinus infection to form.
A sinus infection occurs when the lining of the nasal passages is swollen and filled with fluid, which causes bacteria to settle.
Treatment for a Sinus Infection
- Take an antibiotic, if prescribed.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Eat immune-boosting foods.
- Add moisture to the air.
- Try a nasal irrigation system.
- Use OTC meds to alleviate pain and fever.
- Ease facial pain with a warm compress.
