Staying Safe: STD Testing
Sometimes, the most uncomfortable doctors visits are the ones that we most need to make. Your local AFC Urgent Care and walk-in clinics offer testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), as well as treatment.
“Although some people are hesitant to discuss their sexual health, STD testing is a very important part of any sexually active person’s medical care.” said Dr. Todd Rudolph, lead physician at AFC Urgent Care. “At AFC Urgent Care, privacy and respect are the cornerstones of our care. Together, we can determine what types of tests are appropriate for you.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), STD testing and treatment can help prevent the spread of STDs, and the CDC recommends all adults and adolescents ages 13 to 64 be tested at least once for HIV.
Some STD testing recommendations from the CDC include:
- Syphilis, HIV, chlamydia, and hepatitis B screening for all pregnant women, and gonorrhea screening for at-risk pregnant women starting early in pregnancy, with repeat testing as needed, to protect the health of mothers and their infants.
- Anyone who has unprotected sex or shares injection drug equipment should get tested for HIV at least once a year. Sexually active gay and bisexual men may benefit from more frequent testing (e.g., every 3 to 6 months).
- Annual chlamydia screening of all sexually active women younger than 25 years, as well as older women with risk factors such as new or multiple sex partners, or a sex partner who has a sexually transmitted infection.
