March 19 cannot get here soon enough! While many of us are counting down until the first official day of spring, other people might be counting down until spring sports season arrives. Both are getting closer and closer.
If your child is planning on playing a spring sport, our team at AFC Urgent Care TN wants you to understand the importance of getting him or her a sports physical before the season starts.
Why Are Sports Physicals Important?
For a few reasons, actually. First and foremost, the sports physical is designed to spot any potential health issues that may develop when your child is physically active.
Unlike a regular well-child checkup, a sports physical specifically looks at areas of the body that will be involved in activity. This is important, because it ensures that your child or teen will be prepared to participate fully in practices and games.
Parts of a Sports Physical
- Height and weight check
- Blood pressure and pulse check
- Vision exam
- Examination of the heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose and throat
- Evaluation of posture, joints, strength and flexibility
Why Is a Medical History Part of a Sports Physical?
It’s actually a really important part of a sports physical. During this examination, a doctor is looking carefully for any potential underlying health issues that may become a problem as a child becomes more physically active.
Because of that, the medical provider needs to be aware of a child’s personal and family medical history. This gives him or her a leg up in knowing specific concerns that might crop up and areas that should be most carefully examined.
What You Should Share With the Doctor
- Serious or chronic illnesses among family members
- Chronic illnesses the child has, such as asthma
- Any previous surgical procedures or hospitalizations
- Any allergies
- Past injuries
- Medications your child is taking, both prescription and OTC
